Fears For The Gems

Well...

Ruby had some crusty eyes and sneezing. She shared the crusty eyes with her siblings. I feared the worst as they were too small to medicate. I was preparing myself for a very grim prognosis.

Despite the fact Ruby is still breathing weird and the fact they're so tiny they got put on antibiotics. I've never had kittens so small put on medication before.
Still wheezing but it's not stopping her
Geez woman, clean my bedding already!
Sad little Tanz
I just want to give that little face some kisses
Jasper is on the move, no time for pictures

I think in an overhaul of laws and goals this year the RSPCA are trying to treat animals and being more strict on the criteria that would end in euthanasia.

I've noticed if cats get flu in the past year that they get put on a course of medication and its only when the medication fails to relieve the symptoms or if they keep relapsing that they end up being put down.

Anything to lower the euthanasia rate is great in my books.

In the next few days Ruby has been gaining better but on the down side The Goodies have decided that now is a great time to sneeze and get the curse of the runs as well. When the usual food wasn't working I switched them to bland boiled chicken to see if that would clear up their litter habits.

Not entirely happy with the new pen they've been assigned
Got word that today my cousin's cat Zazee had another litter of kittens (possibly her third). I planned to work out something with the shelter in order to get Zazee spayed so she wont have to have anymore.

Who would think this pretty girl...
Gave birth to this gorgeous boy?
The six (SIX!!) she had this time were all a normal range of colors. (I was secretly hoping she'd throw another color point in there but I guess she didn't date the same dads).

Zazee ~ Not again!
Lets hope we have some markings to tell them apart.

Last Sweet Gone

Honey went in for surgery on Tuesday as expected but the paperwork for Splenda wasn't completed in time so she has to wait until next Monday.
I still have to leave? ~Honey
I don't think she'll have any trouble finding a home
Had Splenda and the Goodies out running around the lounge.

Cute family pic of the Goodies
Sapphire went out for a vaccination and check over. Still no idea why Ruby the little torti breathes different to the other two kittens. Suggestions thrown around were cleft palate or being underdeveloped somewhere on the inside so it's pretty much a waiting game. When I go there with them I'm always surprised when Ruby comes back with me, always expecting them to call her a lost cause.

Speaking of kittens they have names.

Ruby is the torti girl
The littlest of the group but still fighting
Jasper is the buff and white boy (slightly fluffy)
This guy is going to be quite the attention seeker
Tanz (short for Tanzanite) is the buff boy
The Mumma's boy. Bit of a whiner this one.
Splenda enjoyed her extended stay at the Legends but on the 19th of January 2015 she too made the big change and hopefully wont have to wait for too long to find her forever home.

Farewell last of Sugar's litter.

Sapphire & The Gems

Sapphire was the mother I was expecting to have next. She gave birth to three weenie babies on the 3rd of January 2015.
Pretty Sapphire just a baby herself
Sapphire is a pretty tortoiseshell and she's doing a wonderful job with her babies so far. The very sad part is that Sapphire is barely more than a kitten herself. She shouldn't have had to be a mother so young or at all.
Sapphire's little Gems
Her babies consist of a tortoiseshell and two buff kittens. One is a light ginger and white while the other is just ginger. Should make telling them apart easy.
Thankfully should be easy to tell apart
Even on the drive home I noticed something very strange with the little tortie babies breathing. It seemed that compared to her other two siblings that every breath was a struggle. She wheezed.
Worried about the little torti
I got the go ahead to take her in to the vets. Sadly the vets said there was likely something abnormal but when she wasn't even one week old there were no medications and no proper diagnosis on what was wrong with her.

Splenda, Honey and Graces' goodies were let out for a run around the lounge during the evening.

Oreo has decided dad's lap is the place to be whenever play gets too rough for her.

Honey is still here due to a heavy workload the vets postponed her surgery so she may even go in next Tuesday where Splenda may be at a weight to join her.

Always prefers the arm of a chair to the lap of a human.
Such a beautiful girl.

Sweet Goodbyes

Well its time to start saying goodbye to the first litter born here at The Legends.

Grace stayed back today 6th of Jan 2015. She is a beautiful cat, don't get me wrong, but I wish her future family luck as it seemed to be a constant battle to get her to use a litter tray for going to the toilet and not her water bowl.

Her babies could have had her around for another few weeks considering they were still reasonably young but they were doing fine on their own and I felt that maybe KitKat's eyes might stay clear if her mother wasn't tracking litter and who knows what else from one end of their cage to the other.

The boys Salt and Pepper also stayed behind to be booked in for their 'brain' surgery and were to be marked for a transfer to another shelter on Friday.
Pepper (very possible it could be Salt I have no idea who is who)
Pretty sure this is Salt
Cuddly kittens so different from their mother.
Honey is to go into surgery on Friday and to be picked up by the shelter staff from the vets once its done. From there she'll hit the adoption floors.
Adorable little mite
Honey ~ Say What? Who said anything about surgeries?
Splenda, due to her strange illness, will be here for another week. Considering there is another kitten at the shelter on the adoption floors that is blind we seem to have the deaf and the blind covered for this year. Would have been cute if they'd been adopted together being the eyes and ears for each other.
Splenda quite happily thinks she lives here forever
Word has it there may already be another mother with small babies born at the shelter that will be my next group.

Adjusting Kittens

Things don't tend to run smoothly all the time.

First Grace appeared off colour or at least uncomfortable. Her kittens are getting crusty eyes but it doesn't scream flu at me. It is highly likely with her less than clean bathroom habits that they may have conjunctivitis.
Grace taking a break
I had to remove a second black cat off a well used road. Kills me whenever I see any dead animal but knowing someones pet is not longer with them (and right before Christmas no less) hurts to high heavens. Sadly it had been passed for quite some time but I moved it to the side of the road hoping his family would find him. I couldn't imagine leaving it on the road knowing some careless people would purposefully drive over it. He (I didn't check but I'm calling it a He) sadly used up all his lives but no animal deserves to have their remains disrespected in that manner.

Rest in Peace black kitty.

KitKat got put on some eye ointment as she had he worst case of the eye problems.
Kit Kat with her poor inflamed eyes
She still has time to clean her toes though
Sugar's babies are having a few hiccups in fully transitioning or are possibly stressing a little now that their mother isn't with them all the time.

When it rains, it tends to pour. Especially in issues with foster kittens.

My friend Emma (since I have more than one friend called Emma I tend to call her Boyer) came over and helped me bath some kittens. It was around then I noticed Splenda not being her usual self. She out of the blue came down with vomiting and diarrhea.
Splenda isolated with a stuffed toy as company.
At vet check Splenda got put on Betamox (same antibiotic solution as Tiny), was given a 1kg worming tablet (a 4kg one split). The vet advised to fast her to give her tummy time to settle. So she was only allowed her meds, nutrigel (a sugar syrup form of calories and energy) and water. It was touch and go as to whether she'd pull through her illness or the big dose of wormer could have made her worse.
Bouncing back slowly but surely. Noisy little girl.
When Sugar's babies were on the road to recovery I got issues with Graces' babies. Totally cant win.
*Sigh*
Honey ~ We'd like to know where our mum and sister went?
Loki interacting with the Condiment Kittens
Loki .:Whap:.
Can so see the size difference in them (not sure if that's Salt or Pepper)

In a Prickle

Events of 13th January 2016 Well there always comes a time in the season where its a juggle between kittens that need care and ones that do...
